Destination Freedom Choose To Champion Righteousness On New Album & Talk More About Music

Intro:

In today’s interview article, we’ll be covering the Houston, TX-based group Destination Freedom. After dropping their new album titled “Detours”, the group has seen much success so far in the new year. Their sound is quite impressive, as the Christian Hip-Hop/R&B collective remains consistent. It was a pleasure being able to speak with one of the group members about the process & story behind the Destination Freedom movement. Before reading our brief conversation, make sure you check out this new project below.

Me: What was the creative process like while making this new record? How'd you get inspired?

Thomas: To be honest, my inspiration comes from life and the experiences I’ve walked through. I’ve faced plenty of detours along the way, but God found me and carried me through some very dark seasons. I’m in a better place now, and I use reflection and writing as a way to share my story — hoping it encourages and helps someone who may be going through similar struggles.

For the readers & new listeners, how would you describe the group’s sound & its evolution over time?

I’ve always loved R&B and hip-hop, so being able to create in that style while glorifying the Lord means everything to me. That’s why Christian R&B and Christian Hip-Hop are where I belong. The more I reflect on my journey and put it into my writing, the deeper and more meaningful my music becomes.

That makes sense! With that in mind, what does this title mean to you all & why use it?

Detours represents a life reroute — those moments when you felt alone, overwhelmed, and chose a path that didn’t seem right. But even in those wrong turns, Jesus was there, redirecting you, guiding you, and leading you back to the path He always had for you.

What was the most difficult aspect of making this new record for you?

I think the hardest part was revisiting those experiences and finally finding the courage to share them with the world.

Interesting! Furthermore, how is life for you outside of music these days?

Crazy thing, I love flying drones. I‘m also a videographer. All our videos, I made them all myself.

Was there a specific moment in time when you realized music was your calling? Or more of a natural progression?

I’ve been around music my entire life. On my dad’s side, everyone sings and writes, so it’s always been in me. I was part of a few local rap groups and also sang in a gospel group during high school, which helped shape the artist I am today.

Awesome! Additionally, are there any upcoming releases or plans you're comfortable sharing with readers?

I have one that we will be releasing later called “Dear, Gate Keepers,” and I will be making a jazz album featuring many of our songs from our first 2 albums.

And finally, in your own words, why should a new listener check out this new release today?

To be honest, our music exists to lead people to Jesus — that’s the true purpose. It’s never been about fame. If someone is genuinely seeking Him, I believe there’s at least one song on our album that will speak directly to their heart.
