Abeatchemist Talks About New Album “Space Is Deep” & Organically Creating It
Intro:
Today’s interview is with Chicago’s own Abeatchemist, who just dropped his innovative new album “Space Is Deep” last month. Not only is there some dope writing on this album, but the project is also entirely self-produced. Abeatchemist started making beats back in the early 2000s as part of the disbanded rap duo Soul Survivas. “Space Is Deep” perfectly encapsulates the key traits that make his art stand out from other musicians in this lane. Before reading our brief conversation, make sure you check out this new album below.
Me: What was the creative process like while cooking up this new project? How'd you get inspired?
abeatchemist: I really hadn't been writing for about a year or so, and I wasn't even considering doing a new project. But like most of my art, the inspiration usually starts with my production. Once I had a couple of beats that sparked that fire inside, I started writing, which eventually guided my spirit to the vision/concept for Space Is Deep. It all came together organically, and my love when it comes to all things related to the Universe / Space just became the thread for the project.
Were there any specific genres or artists that inspired the creative process for this release?
Not really, I just try and produce the music from a place/space that feels good sonically and what moves me to write. My music incorporates different elements musically, but it's the drums that usually drive the initial feeling & vibe for me, and then I just add other ingredients to it...it's like cooking without a recipe, but you know (or at least) hope it'll taste good when you're done and it's ready to serve.
Nice! Now, how would you describe your current overall sound as an artist/producer?
My style of music is rooted in hip-hop (boom-bap), with lyrics that have meaning beyond just rapping words that rhyme together. I usually record in the spirit and space of when I'm gone, my children and family can listen to my albums and learn about what I was going through at that particular time. But more importantly, they can learn something that will help them in their lives and journey. I approach my music like books!! I'm always evolving with my music, trying new things, adding unique sounds (sometimes weird elements...some work, some don't), all in the effort of self-expression and confidence in hopes of moving the art-form and culture forward.
Are there any key themes or messages you hope listeners take away from the album?
I try and incorporate perspective and meaning in all my music, and that sometimes requires me to open up and be vulnerable, talking about things that may be personally painful and/or uncomfortable for me. The general underlying message of Space Is Deep is anchored around the fact that we (i.e. planet/people) are so incredibly small compared to the vastness of the universe and everything in it. It's intended to get the listener to reflect on things we may take for granted or neglect every day. It looks at the beauty and the gift of life, the current state of humanity, faith, hope, and that we all can do and be better versions of ourselves, vs. our current state.
What was the most challenging part of creating the project during the recording process?
Nothing! Creating music is a Love / it's like my one-on-one therapy session. Creating, producing music, and writing is so natural and easy for me because it genuinely brings me Peace & Happiness.
And at the start of your music journey, how did you come up with your current stage name? And has it changed at all over time?
It's just a name I landed on years ago when I started producing/making beats. Just a simple play on words with beats (sonic boom-bap) and chemistry (mixing different elements together), thus, abeatchemist. I wish I had a more interesting/cool story behind it, but I don't. LOL!!!
I think that’s still dope though haha! Are there any upcoming releases or plans that you're comfortable sharing with the readers?
I have a couple of more projects I'm planning to release on 10/17/25 - Open Vaults I & II. It's music I've previously recorded but have just been sitting on my hard drive. Vol. I have rhymes, and Vol. 2 is all instrumental beats. Other than that, I'm hoping to collaborate and produce with other artists who dig my music/sound. If anyone wants to create some HEAT, dm me at @abeatchemist (IG).
And finally, in your own words, why should a new listener check out this release today?
Everyone should give it a spin or two from front to back, because it's like nothing you've ever heard before...Space Is Deep!! Peace, Thank You!
