Gloria Musique Shares The Creative Writing & Unique Story Behind “Fly”
Intro:
Swedish-born songwriter Gloria Musique is making waves with her latest release, “Fly”. Gloria was always in love with music at an early age, and she even started going to school for her passion at the age of 15, upon moving to London. She can even sing in 4 different languages, despite primarily writing most of her songs in English. “Fly” is another great example of what makes Gloria’s talent so special. Me: How would you describe your creative process while making “Fly”?
Gloria: The creative process entailed creating the chord structure on my keyboard primarily, followed by melody, and lastly lyrics. Once I’ve got my chord structure, I freestyle the melody and lyrics until a word or sentence feels right, and I build around that. The first version had completely different lyrics and melodies, which didn’t do the song justice. When I revisited “Fly” last month, I could hear a new melody and lyrics from a distance. In those moments, I just have to sit still and listen. By doing this, every part of the song naturally came to me, and I had to relearn my song.
Thank you for giving all the exclusive details! And, did you draw inspiration from any other specific genres or artists?
I drew inspiration from ‘90s pop ballads. One of my biggest inspirations is Mariah Carey. When I wrote this song, it was important for me to not hold back vocally to express the emotions and depth of the lyrics, especially in the chorus.
Awesome! How would you describe your current style of music in your own words?
The foundation of my style has always been Pop. Over time, I’ve struggled with knowing how to execute my sound authentically. I can now say that I know myself well. I do pop music with elements of R&B & African music. In some songs, you’ll hear more R&B. In others, you’ll hear more African guitar or drums. However, the foundation will always be pop because of the way I structure and write my songs.
Are there any specific themes or messages you hope listeners take away from this specific listening experience?
I want listeners to feel encouraged to live without fear and doubt. To recognise ways that they may be holding themselves back due to limited beliefs. More than anything, I want my listeners to recognise their greatness and not be afraid to tap into it without hesitation.
Overall, what was the most challenging part of making “Fly”?
Being honest and recognising your flaws. I’m a private person, and to write myself a letter for everyone to hear is daunting but freeing at the same time. Making the lyrics more general while singing it like it’s personal, helped me through the challenging part of creating this song.
I truly think that was a fantastic way to approach writing the song. On another topic, what made you choose your current stage name? Has it always been the same?
My stage name has always been the same. My first name is actually Johanna, but everyone calls me by my middle name, Gloria. Musique means music in French, and it just naturally came to me. I’ve thought about changing my stage name several times in the past, but I feel pretty content with Gloria Musique.
And outside of “Fly,” are there any upcoming releases or plans that you're comfortable sharing with the readers?
I have a few gigs coming up that I will announce on my socials very soon. I’ve been recording a lot of music for the past 2-3 years, so I’ve got new songs that I’m getting ready to drop. This will be a year of a lot of new music
And finally, in your own words, why should a new listener check out this song today?
Listeners should check out this song because it’s relatable, raw, and honest. It’s easy to listen to because it’s simple yet meaningful.
