Solum Talks About His New Single “Hold On” & Putting His Experience In Art Form

Intro:

UK recording artist Solum has been on the rise in his native country & recently delivered his new single “Hold On” for fans to enjoy. As an artist, he’s drawn creative influences from the likes of musicians like Joji & ericdoa. While largely creating most of the song himself, Solum also teamed up with Amorii for the production on the track. The final result is an expression of love that any listener can easily feel & connect to on a personal level. Before reading our brief conversation, make sure you check out this new Solum single below.

Me: First, how would you describe the process that went into creating “Hold On”?

Solum: I think previously, I had wanted to make a song similar to artists like Glaive, and everything just clicked. It was pen to paper almost instantly. At the time, we were in the studio with my girlfriend, and honestly, I heard this one sample and then the next thing I knew the words came to me.

Very powerful experience! In general, did you draw inspiration from any other specific genres or artists?

Yes, Jersey Club was the biggest inspiration genre-wise wise and I had been listening to a lot of Glaive and Joji.

Nice! And, how would you describe your current overall style of music in your own words? Has it evolved over the years?

Definitely evolved. My style was originally very emo rap, and gradually overtime I kept experimenting with sounds to what it is now. It can be hard to describe it but I would say its an electronic Lil peep and Joji blend.

Are there any key themes or messages you hope listeners take away from this one?

A real sense of innocent love for the one you want to spend the rest of your life with. It's mopey, but I hope people really feel my love.

I truly think listeners will definitely feel that raw passion from your writing. From there, what was the most challenging part of creating the song during the recording process?

Getting the vocal layers together perfectly. There is a lot of different layering styles we used, so that took the most time to get that together.

And, how did you come up with your current stage name? It is quite unique!

Originally, when I first started music, I was very depressed and isolated, and music was my outlet. Solum means alone in Latin, which at that time is how I honestly felt. But as I got better, I never wanted it to change because it was who I was, and it was an important time in my life. Fun fact, I was originally called Sol<m, but I changed it to Solum just because it was hard to find me when people wanted to search for me!

Great story! Outside of “Hold On,” are there any upcoming releases or plans that you're comfortable sharing with the readers?

Yes, I have a gig in London 23rd of May! if anyone has the opportunity to come to it they can find the tickets in my Instagram bio!

Nice! And finally, in your own words, why should a new listener check out this song today?

This song is love in its most vulnerable and purest form. Solum is a very unique journey, and anyone who is willing to listen to my experiences is welcome.
