Pokey Lights - July

Intro:

Today’s post features the talented artist July. He’s been on the grind for a while & is doing great career-wise as a result. Born and raised in London, July was exposed to many different music styles throughout his life. His latest release “Pokey Lights” has already amassed over 76,000 streams on Spotify when I wrote this. Find out more about the quality of July’s single in the full review & breakdown below:

Summary:

July’s vocals sound very crisp & clear on this R&B record. His singing sounds smooth over the light airy synth, pad & bell sounds in the instrumental. It almost reminds me of The Weeknd’s delivery in some ways. None of the vocal reverb & delay sounds overpowering, and he keeps the lyrics simple yet effective. July describes a fun starry night & a beautiful woman that’s caught his interest. Not only is the chorus of “Pokey Lights” pretty catchy, but I love the rhyme he uses in the middle of the first verse (0:55-1:10).

I truly love the instrumental used in this July single a lot. It’s a chill ethereal Plug beat that contains enough energy for the hypnotic vibe to not grow tiresome. The 808 bass is very fat & hits incredibly hard. Additionally, the hi-hats aren’t overly used & don’t dominate the other sounds. July floats over the beat during the entire song & changes flows seamlessly during the first verse. It’s also nice hearing how the chorus smoothly follows almost the same rhythmic pattern as the 808s. This only adds even more energy to the overall chill atmospheric aesthetic.

Overall:

This song not only sounds professional but is also a great song for your playlist. Everything about this single is incredibly smooth between July’s performance & the beat itself. I could see tons of people loving this track & think it’s a nice blend of genres too. July surely has a very exciting career ahead of him & it’ll be exciting to see what he follows “Pokey Lights” up with! Thank you for reading, and enjoy July’s new single below.
